Art Exhibit at the Liberia Airport

While many people just travel through an airport without a second glance, Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport of Liberia, Guanacaste, is giving visitors a reason to stop and smell the roses.  Or in this case, to stop and view original works by famous Costa Rican artist Otto Apuy.

Known as the 'Renaissance Man', Apuy works in many medias including sculpture, paintings, and paper creations as well as being a poet and book author.  Born in CaƱas in northern Guanacaste, Apuy has showcased his art in over one hundred exhibits around the world.

In conjunction with Hidden Garden Art Gallery, Liberia Airport will pose as the presentation venue for several Apuy works in the exhibit entitled 'Focus'.  And if that's not enough, additional Apuy pieces are on display at the Hidden Garden Art Gallery located just 5 kilometres west of the airport.

Remember, our one-bedroom condo in Playas del Coco is just 20 minutes from the Liberia airport with weekly rates available from only $300 ;)

Papagayo Seafood Steakhouse & Sushi Boat

On the heels of our Top Restaurants in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, we're almost ashamed to admit we forgot one of our favorite restaurants to eat!

When it comes to the best surf and turf in all of Playas del Coco, Papagayo Seafood, Papagayo Steakhouse, and Papagayo Sushi Boat offer a wonderful selection of delicious cuisine at very reasonable prices.

Actually three distinct restaurants in one venue, Papagayo operates their own fleet of fishing boats while exporting some of their catch to the U.S.  This 'no middleman' operation ensure the freshest of seafood which goes directly from the boat to the table.

We truly enjoyed meeting our host, the wait staff and the attention to detail we experienced every time we dined at the Papagayo trio.  At most, an entire meal for two - shared appetizer, seafood special, filet mignon & three alcoholic drinks - came to no more than $38 US/CAD per visit.  For the amount and quality of food we received, it was a true bargain which kept us going back time after time.

All three Papagayo restaurants in Playas del Coco are open daily from  12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. daily and are just minutes away from our serene ocean view condo available from only $43 per night for a 7 night stay.

A Typical Costa Rican Dish

As you travel throughout Costa Rica, you'll no doubt come across a selection of small roadside restaurants known as 'sodas'.  Popular with ticos and visitors alike, these family run ventures offer delicious food at very reasonable prices along with genuine Costa Rican hospitality.

At many of these sodas, you may notice signs offering a 'typical Costa Rican dish', but just what does this mean?  Think of it this way - the equivalent would be like eating our North American version of comfort food, something your Grandma would make - yummy and made with love.

In Costa Rica, a 'typical dish' is like ordering a combination platter of deliciousness.  Expect to get your choice of meat (chicken, fish, pork or beef) served alongside beans & rice, plantains and a side dish such as salad or vegetables.  Sometimes a 'typical dish' will also include your choice of fresh fruit drinks like pineapple or blackberry.

It's common for sodas to offer 'specials' that will differ from one geographic location to the next; you might also find a buffet of Costa Rican dishes to choose from or a selection of sandwiches including pulled pork.

If you're in San Jose, don't miss what many consider to be the best and first soda in the city, El Chelles.  Just over from Teatro Nacional, El Chelles has been welcoming guests for more than 90 years, so you know their food has to be great!  It's also a perfect location to do some fun people watching.
