It's Rodeo Time in Playas del Coco!

It's party time once again in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste! Mid - to the last weekend of January is the popular Dias del Fiesta, where the downtown streets will be overtaken by people, parades and food carts - so much fun for the entire family!

One of the biggest events during Dias del Fiesta will be the cowboy rodeos! If you've never been, or even if you have, you'll see typical Costa Rican families attending all of the rodeo events scheduled throughout the weekend. Sometimes there are amusement rides set up for the kids as it's a really big celebration!



Horses will be paraded through the streets as the local cowboys show off their riding skills. Who knew? It's not something we heard about before visiting Costa Rica. We always thought eco-tourism, surfing and volcanoes. Not cowboys! Learn more about the Cowboy Culture in Costa Rica!

People will be partying in all the local clubs and bars, not so much in the streets, but you never know! Costa Ricans do know how to celebrate.

Happy Hour in Playas del Coco

There's definitely no shortage when it comes to a great selection of fun bars and nightlife in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. 

Located on the town's main street, the hip ZI Lounge just introduced their exciting new International Tapas menu - what a steal at only USD $4/2,000 colones including taxes!!  But take note, ZI Lounge is only offering these yummy appetizer specials from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. daily.  Be sure to check them out!

The Beaches of Playas del Coco, Costa Rica

Within a few minutes drive of Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, visitors will find beautifully-colored beaches ranging from chocolate brown to sparkling black sand. 

In downtown Coco, Playas del Coco (Coco Beach) offers a beautiful stretch of cocoa colored sand framed by lush rolling hills.  On a typical day, you'll see romantic couples walking or having a picnic, local Ticos on horseback, families having fun while beachcombing, and dive boats coming in from their underwater adventures.  There are a handful of bars and restaurants scattered along the beach.

Playa Panama offers a dark grey sand beach surrounded by lush tropical palms.  With picture perfect views of Bahia Culebra (Snake Bay), Playa Panama is the perfect location for beach combing, swimming, and to while away a lazy Costa Rican afternoon.

Playa Hermosa offers a gorgeous black volcanic sand with sparkling gold flecks - and with its sheltered location, Playa Hermosa is perfect for swimming and soaking up the Costa Rican sun.  Visitors and locals enjoy grabbing a cold one at a few local bars tucked away a block back from the beach.

The deep blue waters at Playa Ocotal give way to a smaller beach of light grey and brown sands.  With it's calm waters, Playa Ocotal offers great snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities.  If you venture an hour south of Playas del Coco, you'll arrive at the trendy chic town of Tamarindo where the stretch of picture perfect white sand beach seem to go on forever! It's a great place for families and beach combing ;)

All of the playas (beaches) are clean and no matter which beach you choose to visit, you'll find ample room to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Costa Rica.  While the beaches may welcome more visitors on the weekend, these 4 area beaches will never be crowded.

Enjoy a Refreshing Costa Rica Pina Colada

When the evening rolls around and you're ready to plan your next day's adventure, enjoy the ocean views from our condo in Playas del Coco while thumbing through your Costa Rica guidebook with a cocktail in your hand.   

It's easy to whip up a refreshing Pina Colada using local ingredients like the sweet delicious Costa Rican pineapples and a few from the Super Mercado grocery store.  With a little prep and our handy dandy kitchen blender, you'll be sipping tropical deliciousness in no time.

Here are two of our favorite recipes for you to enjoy!

Costa Rica Pina Colada Recipe:

• 2 cups crushed ice
• 2 ounces coconut cream
• 3 ounces rum
• 4 ounces fresh pineapple juice

Costa Rica Pina Colada Recipe #2:

• 1 cup crushed ice
• 1/2 cup crushed fresh pineapple
• 3/4 cup frozen crushed fresh pineapple
• 1 tablespoon milk
• 3 ounces rum
• 4 tablespoons coconut cream
•

For a sleepy little beach town, the nightlife in Playas del Coco is second to none.  Visitors will find a selection of happening beach bars with live music, DJs spinning tunes to the disco beat, gambling, and happy hour drink specials along Coco's main tree-lined street.

Here's a quick run down of the nightlife in Playas del Coco:

• Tortuga Bar - one of the newest, located near the pier
• Coconutz - outdoor bar offering great burgers and a fun atmosphere
• Lizard Lounge - pool table, tropical laid back feeling for the younger crowd
• La Vida Loca - beach front bar with a pool table & ping pong

• Flor de Itabo - more games of chance
• Z Lounge - live music most weekends with no cover, slightly older crowd
