While staying at our spacious 2-story, 1-bedroom condo with an ocean-view rooftop terrace in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, a trip to visit the stunning turquoise lake waters of Parque Nacional Volcan Poás, Alajuela, may be in your travel plans.

But if that's currently the case, you may have to wait awhile. As of April 17th, 2017, Parque Nacional Volcan Poás is closed indefinitely due to seismic activity, which includes gas and vapour eruptions that have been spewing volcano rock into the paths of visitors, some reaching as far as 1 km away, eek! This 1 km distance also coincides with the height of the white plume seen above the Poás lake crater. 

Once the rumbling dies down, it's sure to open again to the public but in the mean time, check out the current status of Parque Nacional Volcan Poás hours here.

As a protected region in the Guanacaste Conservation Area, Rincon de la Vieja National Park (Parque Volcan Rincon de la Vieja) is the quintessential example of biodiversity in Costa Rica, while offering an array of rivers, picturesque waterfalls and hot springs, along with mud pits, hiking trails and picnic areas.

Rincon de la Vieja is a 1-million-year-old active volcano that last erupted in 1983 (ash and lava were recored in 1991). Visitors can take a day-hike to the volcano's summit at 6,217 feet (1,895 metres), go horseback riding, or simply take in the abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities where you may see tapirs, spider monkeys and jaguars, along with a plethora of flora and fauna.

Costa Rica Volcano Blows Gas & Ash

Located 31 miles (50 km) to the east of San Jose, Costa Rica, Turrialba Volcano spewed forth another explosion of gas and ash today. There's been a general increase in activity so far this year with 5 separate incidents in total, according to the National Seismological Network at the University of Costa Rica.

If you're looking at renting our Costa Rica condo in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, you can explore the Orosi Volcano Petroglyphs near the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport of Liberia, about 25 minutes from our location, or opt for a sightseeing trip to Lake Arenal with our friends Marvin & Digi at Mardigi Tours, who offer a great 1-day excursion to the area. We would suggest doing both ;)

Volcanoes in Costa Rica

Turrialba Volcano

With 6 active and 61 dormant volcanoes, Costa Rica's seismic activity dates back as far as 65-million years. 

Until recently Arenal Volcano in Alajuela province was the most eruptive, but attention has turned to Turrialba Volcano (Cartago Province), which closed down operations just last week at Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose for approximately 18 hours.

The Weather Channel put out a great time lapse video of Turrialba's latest eruption, plus there's a slide show on Scientific American entitled Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica Erupts on a Historic Scale. According to the research institute, OVSICORI-UNA, seismic activity continues with the expectance of new explosions and strong ash emissions in the near future.

Sony's Epic Eruption of Flowers at Irazú Volcano in Costa Rica

The same company that released 300,000 bouncy balls in San Francisco has unleashed 8 million flower petals in Costa Rica’s Irazú Volcano National Park. The video capturing the release of the petals was created to sell the new Sony 4K Ultra HD TV. The viral video blew up Friday morning. To explain just how much work went into the shoot, we listed 10 of the most awesome details about the video's production (which you can watch below, although not in 4K...)  

1. The Sony production team paid a $300 fee to use Irazú Volcano National Park – the standard official charge in Costa Rica for this type of park use.
2. The Sony team donated a washing machine to the park officials.
3. 4K is four times full HD. “We all thought HD was amazing but 4K is something else. It is a whole new level. From a creative point of view, it’s amazing to be able to see all those details and it’s like having life right in front of you,” says James Turner of Sony.
4. The camera they used to film the video, the Sony F65, shoots the highest resolution for any camera on the market. 
5. There is no CGI (computer generated imagery) in the video. Everything was shot in 4K with Sony's revolutionary F55 and F65 cameras, as used on movies Oblivion and After Earth.
6. An 11-person special effects team was required to film the live action. 
7. The petals were not actually placed in the active part of the volcano. Instead, the Sony team used about 3 tons of imported equipment: giant fans, air cannons, and a 35x35 meter cloth to simulate the effect of a volcanic crater lake.
8. 8 million petals were used to represent the 8 million pixels on Sony’s 4K Ultra HD TV. 
9. The 8 million petals used weighed 3.5 tons. 
10. All the petals used were real and biodegradable.

According to Alba Ramírez, of the Costa Rica National System of Conservation Areas, the Sony production team “left the park exactly like it was before. They picked up everything.” Good job, Sony.
