Can I use my North American cell phone in Costa Rica? Why yes, newbie, you can.

But, your phone must be unlocked and you'll need to buy a prepaid SIM card from ICE Kolbi (pronounced E-say, Costa Rica's national communications company) at the airport upon arrival. Or you can try and find an ICE office somewhere later. We highly recommend doing it at the airport ;)

Your phone must also be a quad-band GSM or 3G capable. The ICE representative will explain different SIM options available, some even come with free Internet access. It's definitely worth it if you need to call ahead for reservations or to research a Costa Rican destination as you go.
